Weapons (2025)

★★★★

The buzz around this movie compelled me to see it even as I am just coming out of an excruciating food poisoning episode, and it did not disappoint. Subverting your expectations at every turn, it’s engaging, provocative and also unexpectedly hilarious. There were a couple jump scare in there, but on the whole I didn’t think this was that scary. Even if you usually try to avoid horror, I think this one is worth it.

This film has inspired much discourse, some of which criticizes the movie for “not really about anything”. I think that’s just a really disappointing reflection of the current viewing expectations of art and actually makes the case that more movies should be like this. It doesn’t take more than a couple hours of reflection to connect the dots to understand the sobering and potent message it’s trying to convey. It’s right there in the title.

Also wanted to give a shoutout to the much needed representation of gay men in healthy monogamous relationships who love sugar and eat six hotdogs for lunch while watching nature documentaries. I’d like a man who will choose from the cereal options I present him through non-verbal communication whilst him performing emotional labor because he cares about his nice colleagues. Another w and instant canon for the alphabet mafia in pop culture.
