The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026)

★½

I already had low expectations, but this truly sucked. Meandering all over the place, this sequel is an absolute mess. Its lack of plot is only overshadowed by its desperation to cram in one more easter egg that does not fit in this oversaturated hodgepodge of Nintendo IP. The characters make completely non-sensical decisions that carry no consequences whatsoever. Things happen without rhyme or reason. The jokes do not land. It felt like I was watching an amateur improv class.

Super Mario Galaxy was the first console game I ever played, and to this day it remains one of my favorite video games. I was under no delusion that this was going to be a good movie, but I still came to see it because I thought even if it’s a bad story, as long as it was at least delivered competently, the nostalgia alone would make this a pleasant viewing experience, like the first movie. However, Illumination could not even deliver something remotely coherent. It’s honestly disrespectful.

Skip this one. It’s not worth your time. The only people who I’d recommend this to are children under the age of 7 who cannot grasp the futility of what’s being shown to them on the screen.
