The Moment (2026)
I feel like I was mostly on the sidelines during brat summer in 2024, probably because my own oddity of mostly only enjoying music that you listen to while sitting still rather than music you can dance to. As a result I mostly missed the opportunity to understand Charlie as an artist
This film touches on the fundamental conflict of making art as a business. Art is provocative and thus alienating by nature, while business always want a wider range of paying customers. From the outside it seems easy to conclude that you should always prioritize your artistic vision because the business will follow, and while that is true to an extent, this film shows us unless you are an egotistical megalomaniac, this is very difficult to stick to.
Charlie’s vulnerability and self-awareness is such a gift that would have never gotten through to me via her music. But I’m really glad it did, through this film that I wouldn’t not even have known about if I didn’t randomly notice a poster on my way to watch Send Help while with a friend who was excited about it. It’s my serendipity of the week.
