The Drama (2026)
Razor-sharp, hilarious, and wonderfully daft, The Drama may be the best romcom for the mentally ill since Silver Linings Playbook. I had a lot of fun.
It’s often said that you shouldn’t judge someone by the worst thing they’ve done. Kristoffer Borgli took just 20 mins to set up one of the most thought-provoking premises in a romcom I’ve seen in a long time to show how naive this common wisdom is. Not only do we absolutely judge someone based on the worst thing they’ve done, but in intimate relationships, we even judge people on the worst thing they didn’t do. We call someone dramatic for having an overreaction to something that ought not to be a big deal. The Drama, very aptly named, shows that deep down, we are all judgmental and dramatic creatures.
It’s often hard to land a story that starts off on a wild premise, but this film manages that too, with a satisfying ending that doesn’t pretend to answer all the questions and clean up the mess, but with openness and grace. Definitely worth a watch, preferably with an expressive theater audience like the people at AMC kabuki.
Also, a couple years ago I went to a wedding where the bride and groom didn’t write their own speeches or vows. They read some Bible verses and that was it. I thought it was so disappointing then, but after this film I realize for some people this may not be a terrible idea. This film has given me the grace to judge them less now.
