Superman (2025)

★★★

You know, I didn’t think it was possible to make a superman hotter than Henry Cavill, but they somehow did it with David Corenswet. It’s not just looks either - I think it’s the himbo-ness of this version of superman that is the biggest draw. I’ve been told that this is closer to the original character from the comics, which I think is working.

Personally, I feel a little discouraged that this is where we are with superhero movies. Yes there is a nice pro-immigrant and pro-Palestinian message in there and it’s woven in somewhat nicely, but everything is surface-level and it’s not a film that engages you intellectually.
Zack Snyder tried to do something more meaningful but it didn’t quite work out, so everything is turning into Marvelian family films.

Actually I change my mind about the pro immigrant message. Something was rubbing me the wrong way when I heard that line comparing superman to an immigrant and I just realized what it is. Clark Kent is a white man who works as a successful reporter at a prestigious newsroom with exclusive access to an extremely high profile source. On top of that he is almost universally adored and has literal crazy superpowers. Is he really the right persona to represent the struggles of immigrants?

There’s no dying James Gunn is really good at making this type of films and this is definitely gonna make a lot of money. But this genre really doesn’t have to be like this. The fact we still have really daring and fresh superhero TV shows proves that they can make something good if they wanted to. But I guess good is niche and niche doesn’t pay the production budgets these movies demand. I guess we’ll have to live in the universe where The Dark Knight series is the peak and it will never be surpassed.
