Slanted(2025)

★★

I know this is supposed to be satire, but it’s so completely enveloped in cringe that viewing is an utterly unpleasant experience. If the comparison is to The Substance, this is not close unfortunately.

Many of the allegories used don’t fully work and are internally inconsistent. If the thesis is becoming white is self-erasure, the arbitrarily inserted consequence of her face falling apart undermines it, not to mention the ending that directly contradicts the key constraint established at the very beginning of the story. Come on, if you want to tell a story based on an unhinged premise, then commit.

Speaking of, I thought this was a good premise for a film, but maybe it’s actually just not. It’s only a fun thought experiment and cannot sustain a feature length film. I actually cannot think of a way you can remove the fundamental flaws of this story. The weight of the premise already basically makes it impossible to inject nuance and there isn’t really anything you can do to not make it so predictable.

The dad is very, very hot though.
