Sinners (2025)

★★★★½

Suspenseful, brilliant, and overwhelming. Do not be deterred by the horror label - this is not a horror movie. It’s just a fiercely creative thriller that is bursting with tension and heart. Easily one of the best movies to have come out this year.

I’m so glad vampire movies are making a comeback - and in true gothic fashion. Vampires really are the mythical creatures with the most storytelling potential. Feeding on blood, turning other people, living in perpetual darkness, and dead inside. Plus the campy elements like need for invitations and aversion to garlic. This film puts all of that to _good_ use and then some. It makes you interrogate the essence of fellowship and community, the role art plays in preserving your identify, and art's cannibalistic relationship with money and power, all while immersing you in good-old vampiristic fun.

The film also features the most apt use of a post credit scene, that actually fits with the narrative and elevates the entire material. It removes some of the value judgement on individuals, recognizing that life is not black and white and people are not human or vampire. To top it off, very committed performance from the entire cast, and Michael B. Jordan is hotter than ever.

Do not miss this movie in the theaters - this film is great with a crowd! I watched this in IMAX in a packed theater and it's hands-down the best cinematic experience I've had all year.
