Resident Evil(2026)

★★★

I had completely forgotten that they have tried to make this film franchise before and I had seen almost every single one. This was the first time I had seen one after having played a few of the games though. I don’t recall if the previous films tried to do the same thing, but this feel does do a very good job of capturing the campy atmosphere of the games with a horror core.

I loved the small details like digging through drawers of abandoned apartments to find ammunition and supplies. The hilarious bit about the invincible locks. It’s not a deep cut in any sense. The girlfriend/pregnancy storyline honestly felt very trite and redundant — I wish they had just made Bryan single and found a few more creative ways to humiliate him.

My biggest complaint is that there was not a Chris Redfield type character. The zombies that have to be killed twice and the sheer human cowardice are bleak enough. Our adorable little sub deserved a moody buff daddy for at least part of his journey to hell, and so did we.
