Mother Mary (2026)

★★

Like many things I’ve seen lately, this is another story that doesn’t have a plot. Storytelling without a plot is hard mode. In this case, they really tried, but the result is just not there. This just ended up being self-absorbed and pretentious, not to mention torturously long. Not even Anne Hathaway could make this viewing experience pleasant.

I really tried as well. When someone takes a risk and puts themselves out there creatively by making a movie as shapeless as this, the least I can do is give them the benefit of the doubt, so I really made an effort to take these characters seriously. I imagined Mary as a combination of Reputation-era Taylor Swift and Melodrama-era Lorde. Didn’t work. Perhaps this was on purpose but the conflict here is so shallow that I could not find any substance.

The visuals are stunning. The costumes are rich and expressive. But that’s about all Mother Mary has to offer. One of the most important things that make a successful plotless film is dialogue. Actually good, cutting dialogue. But the dialogue in this film is repetitive and dull. And no amount of dreary whispering can make it good. All it does it put the audience to sleep. Seriously, if Michael Coel’s character spoke at a normal volume and speed this film would be half as long, and for the better
