Mickey 17 (2025)

★★★

Another installment in Bong Joon Ho’s capitalism-is-the-end-of-humanity cinematic universe. It’s not a particularly well-told story - the sheer amount of exposition will agree, but it remains entertaining for most of its runtime.

Beyond the typical political satire, which I feel like has gotten old with all the movies that want to be Parasite from the last 5 years, there’s some nicely crafted (also cliche, but at least doesn’t feel preachy) message about the role rage plays in protecting your humanity. A capitalistic society will always treat you as an expendable, and it’s on you to treat yourself like a person. Sometimes, that involves some fury, and even violence.

I can imagine how much fun the cast and crew all had in making this movie. Mark Ruffalo plays a great Elon Musk. Robert Pattinson is hotter than I remember. Bong Joon Ho is trying something new, and not everything is going to work out as well as Parasite, or even Snow Piercer, but at least he is not stagnating, and that’s worth commending in of itself.
