I'm Still Here (2024)

★★★★

raw, poignant, yet grounded, i’m still here walks you the havoc left behind by state violence that its survivors must navigate. fernanda torres is brilliant here. if the academy wasn’t so US-centric, she would’ve won that oscar.

a memorable scene for me was when eliana returns from beach volleyball on the day of her father’s disappearance, complaining about not being able to return to her game. when told what had happened to her father, she has a moment of terror, but immediately brings herself back, because she now has to take care of her younger siblings now. trauma doesn’t give you time to grow up. you just do because you have to.
