Friendship (2024)

★★½

Surreal, occasionally hilarious, and profoundly pointless. I walked into this film completely blind, not having seen any of Tim Robinson’s work. While I can’t say I’m a fan after watching this, I can respect the risks he takes and the commitment he has to his brand. This feels like a funky mix of The Office, Nathan Fielder, and maybe a sprinkle of The Banshees of Inisherin, though maybe without the emotional core, at least not to me.

I think one could make meaning out of this story if they really wanted to (hetero male friendship and loneliness epidemic etc.), but it’s not really meant to be enjoyed that way. For most people I would just take the silliness at its face value and have a good laugh, because there is a lot of that in there.
