I was just saying yesterday how I wasn’t sure why they needed to make a third movie. I take it all back. This movie rules. It’s frivolous, heartfelt, and sentimental all in
the best ways. Truly a proper sendoff for the Crawleys. Spoiler warning if you plan to see it.
Mary being vulnerable but growing to be willing to lean on other for support instead of ruminating like when Matthew died. Edith really settling in her girlboss Marquess era. Hugh finally passing the reins to Mary (again). Cora mothering like how she always mothered. Oh and Thomas gloriously becoming the treat to a thespian power couple - I guess the gays have been secretly puppetting the cultural zeitgeist for much longer than we let on.
When they hit us with the Mathew, Maggie Smith and Sybil combo at the end, I fully lost it. I forgot how comforting this family made me feel and am forever thankful for Facebook ads for showing me the trailer of the first Downton Abbey movie when I was standing in line for the Minions ride at Universal Studios Japan, which made me decide to binge all six seasons of the show in two months right before the movie came out.
