Clue(1985)

I was expecting a well-crafted classic whodunit from the 80s, and this ended up being very different from what I was expecting. I can’t say I enjoyed this. 

Most of my frustration probably came from mismatched expectations. The film starts with a very interesting premise and I kept expecting an intricate resolution to slowly unravel it, but kept being thrown unserious shit. Only about third into the movie did I realize that this is not that kind of movie and by that point it was a bit hard to recover. Most of the jokes didn’t land for me either. 

The last time I played Clue was probably over 8 years ago in the TBC lounge back in college. I barely remember how the game works, nor do I remember the cohort I played it with, but I do remember having fun. If I had watched it then, knowing that it’s a silly film, especially if it was in theaters where they only played one ending, I probably would have loved this.

I suppose the truly timeless stories are rare. Most are like this one, meant to be enjoyed with certain people at a certain time. If I tried to imagine an alternative reality where I did get to enjoy this film, the expiry date almost makes it beautiful, but in this reality, I did miss the window on this one unfortunately.
